The diagnosis behind Excessive Sleepiness?

The diagnosis behind Excessive Sleepiness?

Sleep plays a vital role in good health and well-being throughout your life. Getting enough quality sleep at the right times can help protect your mental health, physical health, quality of life, and safety. Sleep needs vary from individual to individual. Some people need only 4 to 5 hours of sleep and many others need 8 hours of sleep or maybe more to feel healthy and fully energized to function during the day. Approximately, the sleeping hour needs for people of different age groups are mentioned below. The amount of sleep you need each day will change over the course of your life. Although sleep needs vary from person to person, the chart below shows general recommendations for different age groups.

Age Recommended Amount of Sleep

Newborns: 16-18 hours a day

Preschool :11-12 hours a day aged children School-aged : At least 10 hours children's day

Teens : 9-10 hours a day

(Adults including the elderly ) : 7-8 hours a day

Just as insomnia is common, so is the problem of excessive sleepiness. It can be a major disorder for many. Excessive sleepiness can be a symptom of an underlying disorder or could also be a disorder in itself. Assessing the cause of this sleepiness is important for dealing with this disorder.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

One fairly common reason for excessive sleepiness is obstructive sleep apnea. People with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) struggle to breathe during the night and wake up many times per hour as a result. These wake ups continually interrupt the natural cycles of sleep, with all its lighter and deeper stages. As a result, the person doesn't have sufficient and healthy sleep and feels drowsy the next day. Many people with OSA don't realize they have it, because they wake up so briefly they believe they have slept continuously through the night (in fact they may have woken up a hundred times or more). If you are excessively sleepy during the day and especially if you snore, have high blood pressure, or are overweight (factors associated with OSA), it's a good idea to have your doctor investigate the possibility of this sleep disorder.

Homeopathic treatment for OSA

Arsenicum album :- For respiratory disorders that worsen at night and are accompanied by fear, agitation, restlessness, weakness, and exhaustion.

Lachesis :- For conditions that get worse while trying to sleep. This remedy is most appropriate for those who are intense, talkative, jealous, and may feel depressed (particularly in the morning). It may also help people who are frightened of going to sleep.

Opium :- This remedy may be prescribed for individuals with sleep apnea and narcolepsy (inability to control falling asleep during the daytime). This remedy is appropriate for individuals who may be somewhat confused due to their sleep disorders.

Sambucus :- For difficulty breathing at night. This remedy is most appropriate for individuals who may have nasal obstruction or asthma and actually jump up out of bed with a feeling of suffocation.

Spongia :- For respiratory symptoms that are worsened by cold air and lying down. This remedy is appropriate for individuals who often feel a tightness in the chest area.

Sulfur :- For chronic conditions accompanied by sleep disturbances and nightmares, especially if the individual also has skin rashes that become worse with heat. This remedy is most appropriate for individuals who prefer cold temperatures and strongly dislike any kind of restriction.
